The SMD is a single stage, axially split casing, double suction pump designed for raw or clean water applications. The range of SMD pumps is an evolution of Sulzer’s traditional SM and SMN series. Our extensive experience in design and manufacturing has resulted in a robust, long lasting, and easy-to-maintain pump.
The SMD is the world’s newest design amongst its counterparts delivering top class hydraulic performance. It has been designed with the tightest technical specifications in mind to meet the highest levels of efficiency and suction performance for current and future process demands. Its innovative design allows for an optimum hydraulic fit for each duty point, ensuring lower energy consumption and best hydraulic performance over a wide range of flows. The SMD pump was developed at the product design center in Winterthur, in close cooperation with Sulzer’s global manufacturing locations.
The SMD offers exceptional suction performance with optimum NPSHR from the best efficiency point to maximum flow enabling parallel operation with minimum increase in NPSH. Low NPSH provides increased flexibility when planning pumping stations and also offers sustained high efficiency levels over long periods of time. The SMD compact hydraulic dimensions together with a reduced number of parts lead to a cost-effective manufacturing process.
The standard range comprises 20 sizes each including a minimum of two hydraulic options which are achieved through exchangeable impellers. This solution optimizes product and inventory costs. Extended hydraulic coverage is possible upon request.
SMD offers low vibration levels and longer bearing life resulting in lower life cycle cost. This is achieved through a short bearing span and improved hydraulic design. The minimized bearing span and casing thickness have been optimized to the maximum allowable working pressure ensuring lower weight whilst delivering mechanical reliability and a longer life cycle at minimum cost.
The SMD pump has a reduced number of parts and extensive interchangeability, which leads to minimum levels of inventory for customers and faster parts delivery. Vertical installation is a standard option with the same upper and lower casing parts. The mechanical design allows for easy maintenance. Bearings and mechanical seals or gland packing can be replaced without removing the upper casing thus allowing for shorter maintenance during shutdown periods.
SMD pumps are designed to meet the needs of a wide range of raw, clean, sea and brackish water applications like:
Water Intake
Horizontal or vertical arrangements of the SMD are typically used as water intake pumps in dry pit installations.
Water Transport and Municipal Supply
The SMD is ideal for transporting large volumes of water over long distances. It may also be used for onward distribution to points of consumption.
Desalination
SMD pumps are ideal as low pressure booster and product water pumps in large desalination plants based on Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology, as well as brine or distillate pumps in large Multi-Effect-Distillation plants (MED) where low NPSH pumps are required.
District Cooling / Heating
Large capacity, axially split casing pumps are required to distribute cooling or heating media (usually water) to the network for both residential and industrial applications.
Other applications
The SMD is suitable for other applications where highly efficient, axially split casing, double suction pumps are required:
- Firefighting
- Industrial water services
- Water treatment
- Irrigation
- Drainage
