  Strong Research and Development

Sulzer Pumps places great emphasis on research and development. It starts with basic research, focusing on hydraulics, cavitation, erosion, corrosion and mechanical design (particularly rotor-dynamic design). Basic research advances are then applied to product development, where our engineers work closely with customers on the practical implementation of innovative ideas. Sulzer Innotec is the centralized research and development unit of the Sulzer Corporation.

Unique Pump Testing Capabilities

Sulzer operates over 20 test facilities worldwide. Our facilities are suitable for horizontal, vertical, open pit, high flow rate/high energy and multiphase testing, with the ability to perform tests at 50 and 60Hz and, depending on the site, using diesel engines, gas engines and gas turbines as well as electric motors.

Specifically for nuclear applications, a 50/60Hz test bed for full scale pump testing is located at the Burnaby, BC Canada factory. The test loop is designed for testing horizontal and vertical pumps to 15,000 horsepower (11,185 kw) at 50 and 60Hz and at temperatures up to 600F (315C). We perform full scale pump tests simulating field operating conditions, flows, temperatures and pressures—including LOCA and thermal transient operation. Computerized data acquisition technology records data from precision measuring instruments to ensure accurate output performance in compliance with such test standards as ASME PTC, HI and ISO. Complementing the manufacturing facility are project management and quality control systems certified for the demanding nuclear power generation business.
